Ashland has a lovely history that combines relaxation and higher education. Ashland, which is just 15 miles outside Richmond, was developed in the 1840s as a mineral springs railroad resort of the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad! Already off to a great start, the well-respected Randolph Macon College relocated to this prime area in 1868, helping Ashland grow from just one square mile to seven square miles, all while taking on a certain collegial feel. Even when cars became important, Ashland stayed relevant thanks to the construction of U.S. Route 1 and I-95, resulting in it being known locally as the “Center of the Universe” thanks to its central location in Virginia and easy access to just about everywhere.
That access is just another reason people want to call Ashland home and why Hickory Hill has proven so popular. LifeStyle’s home designs fit in well with the mix of architectural history of Ashland, which started off with Victorian-era buildings from its resort days, but over the past 50 years or so, the city has continued to grow and you’ll find attractive modern homes, as well as Craftsman-style homes and classic Americana. We offer a variety of brick, stone, siding, and shingle exteriors to help you find the home that speaks to you.
There’s plenty of the old charm remaining in the town, even with its growth. It also remains an easily walkable town, allowing you to get out and enjoy the fresh air and take in the charming storefronts and restaurants served by wide sidewalks and charming decorations. It’s truly a picturesque area. Part of that is due to Ashland’s well-documented history, which can be explored in the town’s own museum, the Ashland Museum, which includes a wealth of documents, but also interesting artifacts. You’ll be surprised how fascinating it can be to learn the local history and see the changes that have occurred as well as the things that have stayed the same. Another site of historical interest is Slash Church, the oldest church in Virginia, built in 1729 and still open to the public.
Still, you don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy Ashland. There are a variety of parks in town, including Carter Park, covering 13.5 acres and offering plenty of outdoor space for a variety of activities. It features hiking trails, picnic areas, and even a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool to keep you cool during the warm summers.
Speaking of summer, every June, Ashland hosts the Strawberry Faire, with vendors from around the state offering up a range of strawberry-themed goods. To add to the appeal, there are performances by local musicians and a children’s pageant. To top it all off, there’s a farmers market behind Town Hall every Saturday between May and October, and when the farmers market closes up for the season, you’ll find holiday markets in November and December.
Ashland really is the kind of picturesque place people imagine living in and becoming a part of the greater community.
