How to Create Your Dream Dining Room

If you’re currently looking for a home builder in Chesterfield VA and you’ve been looking at floor plans, including ours, you may have noticed that dining rooms are making a comeback. For years, separate dining rooms had fallen out of favor, with open-plan dining areas proving more popular. While the open-plan dining area still remains popular for more casual daily dining, the dedicated dining room is ideal for anyone who loves to host dinner parties for friends and family.

There are things to keep in mind when decorating your dining room to help you get the most use out of it. Think about how many guests you’re likely to have, your design aesthetic, lighting, and those finishing details to create a space that you’ll want to eat in every day!

The size of your table is obviously a key issue. You want a table that fits the room and doesn’t overwhelm it or look too small. If you host dinners for large and small groups, consider a table with expandable leaves so that you always have a table that fits the occasion.

Chairs are the next major issue, particularly the fabric you choose. Whether you have fabric on the back and seat or just the seat, it’s important to consider whether the fabric will hold up to wear and tear and especially spills. There will always be spills, so consider fabrics like leather and microfiber, which are easier to clean, or at least go with patterns that may hide some of the worst stains. Don’t forget comfort, though. Hard, uncomfortable chairs aren’t conducive to enjoyable meals.

While people often include candles on the table for style, you will need appropriate lighting. Chandeliers of varying sizes remain popular, especially if the light intensity can be lowered or increased. The chandelier is also a place where you can have some decorative fun. Choose something a bit over the top that still fits your taste and the general look of the room. Dining rooms can be almost theme rooms, so consider that as you choose your lights. You may also want to add wall sconces to further set the room’s atmosphere.

Dining rooms often seem formal and stuffy, and you can keep that formal feel or you can create a room that is more playful – or go for a combination of formal and fun. The choice is yours. This is a room where you can use a chair rail with a solid wall color paint below and a bold patterned wallpaper above. Artwork, sideboards, table runners, and more can help create a unique look to your dining room, and don’t forget a rug beneath the table to help anchor it in the room. Even if you have carpet in the dining room, a rug that extends two feet from the table is a great way to put that finishing touch on the room. Once again, patterns or dark colors are useful in hiding any spills.

The dining room is making a comeback, but it doesn’t have to look the way it did previously. Have some fun with this room and create a space where you’re happy to host family and friends all year long.
