Chesterfield County Public Schools Break Ground on New Middle School
When purchasing one of the new homes in Chesterfield VA, the quality of the schools is important for all home buyers, not just those with children. After all, quality schools keep up the value of the nearby homes. So if you’re looking for a new home in Chesterfield County, you’ll be pleased to know ground has just been broken for the 13th middle school in the county.
Chesterfield County has the largest school system in central Virginia, so adding a new school helps reduce the number of students per class, leading to a better learning environment. The new school should be open in August 2025.
The three-story school is being built in the Matoaca District on 105 acres next to Westerleigh Parkway. The school, which is expected to cost almost $100 million, is being paid primarily by the Virginia Public School Authority bonds, with some funds coming from other local sources.
Construction was able to start earlier than expected, which will please both teachers and students as this modern school will be available sooner. This and other schools that were voted on in the 2022 bond referendum show the importance that the community places on public education.
Built for 1,800 students, the 254,084-square-foot structure will place sixth, seventh and eighth grade students on separate floors. Each floor contains 19 regular classrooms and five science labs, as well as conference rooms, teacher workrooms, and offices spread throughout the school. In addition, an exploratory wing offers electives in subjects such as art, world languages, technology/fabrication, business, and family and consumer science.
The school’s main entrance includes a security vestibule flanked by administrative offices and the counseling department. In addition, the school will feature a 1,000-seat auditorium, 650-student capacity cafeteria, 1,200-seat gym with adjacent locker rooms, and an auxiliary gym. A music suite next to the auditorium includes spaces for band, chorus, orchestra, and drama.
The school site will be developed to include an eight-lane running track around a soccer field, two play fields, two softball fields, and tennis and basketball courts. There will also be parking and drop-off areas.
