How to Make the Most of a Spare Room or Flex Space

One of the most common features of contemporary homes these days is the inclusion of one or more flex rooms. Our Chesterfield VA new homes typically feature a flex space and if you’re trying to decide what to do with this extra space, here are some popular choices.

These days, the most obvious choice is a dedicated home office. People want and need somewhere to work in peace and quiet where they can focus and have everything they need within easy reach. Of course, unlike typical offices, you can decorate to make your office more ergonomic, inspiring, and attractive. You can also set items up in a way that is most convenient for how you prefer to work.

While there doesn’t seem to be the expectation of a major baby boom in the coming months, a flex room still makes a great nursery or a dedicated child’s play room. This is particularly useful if the room is close to where the adults are, allowing some supervision while also giving children a place for independent play. Not to mention it also helps to keep the toys from spreading quite as far throughout the house!

However, the best part about a flex room is the fact that it’s often a bonus room on top of all of your already fulfilled room needs. This gives you the freedom to turn the space into whatever you want. If you’re a budding artist or craft enthusiast, turn the space into your own studio and play around with different materials and styles. You can set up tables and drawing boards and shelves of supplies to let your imagination run free.

If you’re a musician at heart, turn it into a music room, where you can easily go in and play whenever the mood strikes you. If you have a musical family, it’s a great way to even have a place to play your music together or create something new.

Bibliophiles have the opportunity to have that dedicated home library they’ve dreamed of, full of wall-to-wall bookshelves and comfy chairs for hours of reading. Plus, you’re likely to finally have space for new books, rather than desperately trying to make your collection fit just a few bookcases.

Similarly, if you collect certain items, you could always use the room as a great place to put your collection on display. After all, if you’re going to have a collection, you should have somewhere where you can enjoy it.

Finally, the most common use of a flex room is as a media room. Big screens, large sofas, surround sound, and perhaps a bar area for drinks and snacks make the space into your own personal cinema or just a fantastic place to play the latest games. It’s also a great place to hang out, whether it’s kids and their friends or the whole family.

These spare flex rooms give you room to grow and change. What starts off as a child’s playroom can be converted into a media room or a library or whatever you choose as your needs and interests change.
