Neutrals and minimalism always have their place, but this year is seeing a shift to more warmth and the addition of more elements of nature, including plants and various natural textures. Wood, particularly warmer, darker, richer woods are popping up throughout homes, from living rooms to kitchens. Darker woods like walnut, or dark raw woods, are showing up in cabinets, bookshelves, eye-catching coffee tables, and even paneling. These darker tones add a sense of rich elegance, far from the tired faux paneling of yesteryear.

Limewashed walls and textured concrete are popping up more this year, offering an edgier look, while still making the most of the organic texture and patterns that they can achieve. Use them with warm neutrals like sage green, bold rich colors like dark eggplant, and softer textures and furniture shapes to find a stylish but comfortable balance.

Similarly, if you like the simplicity of minimalism, but find it too bare for a comfortable living space, try a large-scale, whimsical gallery wall. Rather than linear grids of pictures or one bold piece of art, create a more playful arrangement of pictures, prints, paintings and even three-dimensional pieces, such as decorative plates, in a variety of colors and sizes. As well as being a great way to display random pieces you may have trouble finding a spot for otherwise, it adds a more relaxed feel to an otherwise orderly, streamlined space.

In fact, minimalism is consistently being tempered with the addition of bold florals or even animal prints and a few complementary decorative accent pieces. Think of a bold floral print accent wallpaper or sofa, or a zebra-print focal rug with accent chairs with warm red fabrics to complement warm, neutral sofas and furniture. Even checkered flooring adds some liveliness.

You can stick to minimalist design, but set it amid a room drenched in a deep rich color such as dark eggplant, deep navy, or even charcoal. This is great for a bold bedroom, as the dark colors lend themselves to a calm atmosphere, but they can also be used for a striking home office, complemented by dark metal bookshelves and desk, along with subtle leather chairs. If you’re planning to buy one of the new homes in Chesterfield VA, these trends offer a mix of cutting-edge design and timeless aesthetics.
