ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation
This year’s Richmond Homearama takes place June 1-16 at the River Mill community in Glen Allen. River Mill is a master-planned community in Henrico County, with a focus on community, nature, and appealing to just about every lifestyle. With a wealth of walking and biking trails, a clubhouse, pool, play area, and more, this is a community where neighbors can develop real bonds, sharing friendship and support. It’s no surprise then that ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation is the charity partner for this event, as their goal is to provide unwavering support for patients and their families.
ASK was founded in 1975 by a group of parents in the pediatric oncology clinic at MCV (now the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU) whose own children were undergoing treatment. They are now Central Virginia’s largest and most comprehensive provider of support services for children with cancer. That support doesn’t stop with just the children. It’s there for all of the families members, including parents and siblings, because cancer impacts the entire family. The support they offer begins the moment of diagnosis and extends through treatment and beyond.
Because of their focus on Central Virginia, they are able to pour all of their hard work, the help of volunteers, and financial aid into creating real results. Their programs work and patients have lower anxiety levels as a result of the support they receive. Because of their education programs, patients and survivors are able to continue their education, despite missed school days and cognitive late effects from treatment. Furthermore, families are able to stay in their homes and don’t have to choose between food and power, thanks to ASK’s financial assistance fund.
Their goal is to make life better for children with cancer and there are many ways to help, from volunteering, donations, and spreading the word about the Richmond Homearama, particularly the kick-off party, Boots and Bling, being held May 30, at River Hill, from 6-10 pm.
