Celebrate Summer at the Chesterfield County Fair

Residents of new homes in Chesterfield VA can celebrate summer at the Chesterfield County Fair. The annual event takes place August 24-September 1 at the fairgrounds on Courthouse Road in Chesterfield.

The fair began in 1911 and has kept many of its traditional features. Visitors can see farm animals, including a giant steer and horse. Indoor exhibits include arts and crafts, canned goods and home-grown produce. A contest will be held to determine the largest watermelon grown in the area. “Kids” of all ages will enjoy the model train display.

Outdoor attractions center around a midway carnival with kiddie rides. Encircling the midway, a range of activities and demonstrations include barrel train rides, oxen-pulled wagon rides, a Civil War encampment and hospital, a blacksmith, violin maker and weaver. Additional highlights include a circus, steam engine, dunking booth, pig races, petting zoo, pony and camel rides, a chainsaw sculptor, mechanical bull rides, bingo games and a western show. Of course, plenty of delicious food will be available.

Musical entertainment will be offered by bands including the 7 Bridges Eagles tribute group and a Journey tribute band called Departure. Other events range from the Princess Pageant, 4-H Talent Show, singing contests and rodeo to a military parade, a separate Grand Parade and Beach Party Night.

Regular adult admission to the Chesterfield County Fair is $10. Seniors over 60 can get in for $7. Children 4-12 pay $5, while kids 3 and under receive free admission. The admission price includes entrance to all exhibits and many of the special shows. Carnival rides require tickets, which must be purchased separately.

Tram service and shuttles make it easy to get around the fairgrounds. Benches are provided for those who need to rest a while. The midway and walkways were recently paved, so the fairgrounds are stroller and wheelchair-friendly.
