In fact, Chesterfield County is home to 67 parks, offering up an array of natural beauty and fun activities. These are a few of the many parks offering up diverse options no matter your interests.
The Dutch Gap Conservation Area is a great choice for a variety of outdoor activities. There’s a 4.5-mile gravel loop ideal for hiking, walking, running, biking, and even horseback riding. There’s also a 2.5-mile tidal lagoon water trail if you prefer to go kayaking or canoeing. It’s a flat-water environment, so it’s good for beginners, while still being enjoyable for those more experienced. There are even fishing options, as well as plenty of sights for bird watchers throughout the 800-acre conservation area that includes waterways, wildlife, and woodlands. The conservation area surrounds Henricus Historical Park – location of the 1611 Citie of Henricus, the second successful English settlement in the U.S. – where you can take in reenactments and historical teaching programs about the settlement and Powhatan Tribe that inhabited the area
Robious Landing Park is another great place to take in the scenery and the wildlife. Located on the Virginia DWR Bird and Wildlife Trail it is one of the best places to see birds and wildlife in the Commonwealth. There are also some great options for those with a fishing licence. This section of the James River is home to bluegill, channel catfish, gar, redbreast sunfish, and smallmouth bass. You’ll also find a boat slide for non-powered boats such as kayaks and canoes, and there’s also a floating dock ideal for standup paddleboarding. On top of all of this, there are 3.4 miles of trails with wonderful views. Make a day of it with a picnic, or even reserve a picnic shelter for larger gatherings.
For a park that seems to offer a bit of almost everything, don’t miss Rockwood Park, the county’s oldest park. With 171 acres of wooded parkland, you’ll find 5.5 miles of walking paths and fitness trails for leisurely walks or more focused exercise. As well as the trails and scenery, there’s also Ruff House dog park, as well as a nature center with live reptile and amphibian exhibits. There are plenty of sporting options, too, including lighted courts for tennis, basketball, and pickleballs, a public archery range, athletic fields, and even regulation horseshoe pits. There’s even a ten-control-point orienteering course for explorers and those with a penchant to navigate by map and compass.
