Make the Most of Your Outdoor Space this Summer
With the summer kickoff, it’s time to make the most of your back porch this year. Particularly as it’s a more private area, it’s a great place to get more creative with your homes in Chesterfield VA. Let color, prints, and decorations not only make your outdoor space more attractive, but also somewhere you feel comfortable spending time, whether relaxing or entertaining.
If you have a covered back porch, which many of our homes do these days, then get creative with some color and paint the roof of your porch. Many people like to paint it a clear sky blue, but why not go with a shade of yellow, either soft or bold, to brighten your space. The choice is up to you!
Whenever possible, add a swing to your porch. A comfy swing that seats two is a great place to while away some time, chatting with family and friends or just a place to relax on your own with a good book and a cold drink. Make sure to add plenty of cushions and try to find a swing that is deep enough to sink into comfortably.
Many people like to use their porch in the evening, when it’s a bit cooler, though a ceiling fan also helps. That means you should think carefully about lighting. You don’t want harsh lights, such as many of the lights typically installed outdoors. You want soft, cozy lighting. Strings of paper lanterns, big or small, all white or in multiple colors, add a soft glow that still provides enough light. If you have some trees or bushes in your yard, consider adding in strings of small white lights for a subtle but magical look for your yard. Even if you don’t have trees, a tall potted tree or plant could be wrapped with some lights for that extra glow.
Depending on the size of your porch, consider creating different zones. Put the swing on one end, next to more traditional seating, including at least a love seat and some single chairs and a table for resting food and drink. Further down, set up a table where you can dine out comfortably. Think of how many people you’re likely to have dining there regularly and try to find a table that will fit them all easily. Consider some with folding sides that can be used for more intimate meals or opened up for larger groups.
Ultimately, you want your back porch to feel like another family room. Make it as soft and comfortable as possible so it’s not a chore to sit for hours. Don’t forget to add flowers, lanterns, and other decorative features, including outdoor rugs, that can be part of a theme or just pieces that you like and that work with the overall color scheme you choose. The more your furnishings look like real furniture, the more likely they are to be comfortable and convenient, making your porch an ideal spot to entertain throughout the summer and even into the fall.
Make the most of the back porches of your homes in Chesterfield VA by making them feel like an extension of your home, but have a little more fun with it. Soon you’ll be spending as much time outdoors as indoors!
