What to Know About Living in Richmond

There are a lot of reasons why people move to the new homes in Richmond VA. The state’s capital city is considered one of the best places to live on the East Coast, with a strong job market, affordable cost of living, delicious dining options, and so much more. Come discover some of the reasons why you should make this welcoming city your new home.

Richmond’s cost of living is lower than the national average, and real estate is more affordable here than in many other big cities in the state. Plus, Virginia residents have a lower property tax rate than many other states in the country.

River City, as Richmond is also known, is one of the country’s best mid-size cities when it comes to finding work. There are numerous Fortune 500 companies in Richmond, as well as a healthy environment for startups and entrepreneurs through aid from Startup Virginia. Tech, manufacturing, financing and more are among the industries found throughout the city.

As more people consider alternate methods of transport than cars for every outing, you may be interested to know about the growth and improvement of the city’s public transport, in addition to the city’s walkability and bikeability. You can even rent a bike through RVA Bike Share. Of course, if you do need to travel outside the city, there are bus routes and train lines, as well as the Richmond International Airport.

Even if you don’t cycle to work, there are plenty of bike trails to enjoy in your leisure time, including the 52-mile bike path at Virginia Capital Trail. There’s no shortage of outdoor activities to enjoy throughout much of the year, including whitewater rafting and bird watching at James River Park. Byrd Park offers an array of activities including tennis, pedal boat rides, picnics, and more. Take a leisurely stroll through the Japanese Garden at Maymont, and enjoy the view of the waterfront from the riverbanks at Belle Isle. Even your dogs will enjoy Richmond with the Church Hill Dog Park at Chimborazo Park.

Richmond is also home to the 17th Street Farmers Market, which is one of the oldest in the country. In fact, there’s plenty of history in Richmond, including  St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. You can also tour the Old Senate Chambers at the Virginia State Capitol, home to the oldest legislative body in the country. There’s even an Edgar Allen Poe Museum if you enjoy your history with a literary touch.

You’ll also be able to enjoy a wide range of events and festivals throughout the year, such as the Richmond Jazz and Music Festival, Dominion Energy Riverrock Festival, the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival, the International Dragon Boat Festival, and the Richmond Folk Festival.

There are also arts events, plenty of sporting events, family fun entertainment, including theme parks and zoos, and so much more. We’ve only scratched the surface of all that Richmond offers.
